Using Aromatherapy to Support Animals

When I think of aromatherapy for animals, I see more than just little bottles of oils. I see a space where a cat — often wary, withdrawn, shaped by past experiences — slowly begins to let go of tension. I see a dog finally able to lie quietly in the corner of a room, take a deep breath, and stop standing guard. Aromatherapy isn’t magic; it’s a subtle art of working with emotions and the body — a gentle way to offer animals calm, restoration, and a sense of safety.

Why does it work at all? Essential oils have an extraordinary ability to influence the limbic system — the part of the brain responsible for emotions, memory, and connection. A scent can evoke a memory, lower stress levels, help ground us in the “here and now.” For cats, dogs, and other animals who live in a world of scents, thoughtfully chosen aromatherapy becomes a delicate but powerful emotional support.

But before you reach for that first oil, let’s pause. Aromatherapy for animals requires great care, because their bodies cannot metabolise many compounds that are harmless to us. That’s why I always say: don’t do this alone. Working with a specialist is essential — to choose the right oils and hydrosols, and most importantly, to learn how to use them safely.

What does this work look like? First, we talk — about your cat, your dog, their history, needs, and challenges. Then I prepare several carefully selected scents, offered to the animal in a way that gives them choice. We never present a scent directly from the bottle — we use cotton pads, allowing a gentle, non-intrusive presentation. The animal decides whether to approach, walk away, or stay near the scent. This freedom of choice often matters more than the scent itself — it’s the moment when the animal regains agency over their own needs.

Alongside essential oils, hydrosols play an increasingly important role. These water-based plant distillates are gentler, safer, and have a soft aroma with equally valuable properties. Hydrosols are like a “gentle shadow” of the plant — carrying its essence without the intensity that might overwhelm sensitive systems. Rose hydrosol soothes emotions, linden calms and relaxes, lavender brings gentle peace. Importantly, hydrosols are not sprayed on bedding or fur — they’re offered in diluted form, in a small bowl, where the animal can choose to approach, smell, or sometimes even drink if they wish.

Sometimes, the biggest shift doesn’t come from the scent itself, but from what happens in the relationship. When the caregiver slows down, starts observing, listening, offering space for the animal to simply be. Aromatherapy becomes just a tool — a gentle bridge between your calm and your pet’s needs. Interestingly, during such a session, we often also choose scents that support the caregiver — because a calm human makes for a calm animal. How you feel resonates through the whole home, and animals immediately sense when you’re truly “here and now.”

If you’re caring for an animal with a difficult past, anxiety, or stress — I’m here to help. Together, we’ll find support that helps them regain balance. And you know what? It’s not about perfection. It’s about being in this together.
